Whether a section displays pictures, what pictures they are, and what order the keys for your keyboard display in are all customizable to your preferences. Here's an arbitrary expansion of non-picture based section display. Here's an expansion of one of my very busy PT based key clusters: To open all descendants of a node at once, hover over that node to select it, then click on the red-on-white + or - symbols in the tool bar. Any sections can be folded or expanded as needed by clicking on a node to open or close its descendants. The relevant key combination would be shown highlighted for that command. Now suppose you entered a query on the actions side by clicking the green arrow on Take->Crop to active take: Thus, the keyboard layout, besides being oriented to my physical keyboard, shows PT-based key groups as well:

Note that I'm using what started out as a Pro Tools keyboard order for many signficant commands, then embellished around those with specific Reaper commands. Here's a partial expansion of the actions query area for Main, and the Main section in keyboard order. Usually the display would be much larger: Ok, here are some shots with smallish window sizes. I'm sure reaMindMapper will not be everyone's cup of tea, but some will find it quite helpful. However, it should adapt with little or no change to other versions of Windows.

Currently, only Windows configurations are supported, and Windows 7 64-bit with Reaper 32-bit is the only version I've been able to test on. Obviously, the best time to do this part is after you have most of your layout done.īe sure and read the README-INSTALLATION.TXT file for configuration information. Hopefully, future versions of Freeplane will have more print flexibility. Load that into a viewer like Irfran, print from there with options to stretch to page. The best way I have found to print relevant sections is to save a screen snapshot of the area to print, paste that into paint or another program and crop the irrelevant sections out, then save it as a bmp file. The printing capabilities are not too robust in Freeplane. Use the little green arrows to cross reference between sections and actions. Assuming you know what you want to do, you just forgot what key sequence it was assigned.
It's handy to keep visible while using Reaper (in the background) to help recall keys that were assigned with its look-up by action.

In the software you can also filter by various criteria and search in numerous ways to find things quickly based exactly on the way your keyboard is configured for Reaper. It provides a color coded visual layout which relates keys to functions by modifiers and also lets you find the right key combination from an action definition. That's where the Mind Mapping software came into play. However, I was not happy with either version because they just didn't provide the information in a way you could easily learn it. Typical of how you might use a spreadsheet as a reference. The difference was that my version had the keys in colums left to right in keyboard-order sections, and key modifiers in rows downward from each section. csv format files which could be loaded into Excel. From that I built a version that output to. Jeff's original and Perl work produced a viewable and printable display of functions by section, and within each section by key (alphabetically, vertically) and modifiers (horizontally). I started a perl adaptation of Jeff's work, while he built the original data array structures in Perl. The idea of building data arrays from Reaper's HTML output file originated with Jeff Cecil (jmcecil on the forum). Freeplane requires Oracle/Sun Java also be installed, if not already. I use Strawberry Perl, but Active State Perl should work fine as well. ReaMindMapper requires Perl 5.1 or newer. It can be run as a stand alone program separate of Reaper, or from a shortcut assigned in Reaper.
The Mind Map layout can be used as a learning assistant for keystroke combinations, as well as a good visual aid to overall keyboard layout. Mind Mapping can be used for a variety of other applications as well. Freeplane provides a different way of looking at your Reaper keyboard layout which is color coded, grouped by related keys (if desired) and shows an organized relationship of key grouping, and what keys are assigned to what actions. ReaMindMapper is a script I wrote in Perl which converts the output of Reaper's Actions and Shortcuts list (Shift-F1) into a format which is understood by the Freeplane Mind Mapping software.
